Review
The soundtrack to Ric Burns’ six-part PBS documentary New York traces the origins of its citizens and culture through music. Irish and Italian music such as Cherish The Ladies’ rendition of the traditional tune "Famine Irish" and the New York Orchestra’s performance of Puccini’s "O Mio Babbino Caro" represent the heritage of New York City’s immigrant population, while marches, ragtime, jazz and pop standards complete the city’s thriving musical creativity. Energetic pieces like John Phillip Sousa’s "Manhattan Beach March" and Scott Joplin’s "Wall Street Rag" convey the rapid pace of urban life, and George Gershwin and Cole Porter’s original performances of their classics "Rhapsody In Blue" and "Anything Goes" add to the album’s authenticity.
