Pop Underground实际上就是Power Pop。70年代至80年代早期是Power Pop这种音乐类型的黄金时期，Pop Underground便是Power Pop黄金时期过后的另一种称呼而已，因此现今的Pop Underground音乐仍然是以Power-Pop的音乐特色而著称－由不列颠入侵（British Invasion）所带来的美妙旋律与合声、响亮而赋予强健的吉他声色。然而由于Pop Underground所要延续的音乐形式从一开始便就已经是极具经典性的，因此可以想见，此类音乐艺人需要做些创新才行－如用当今的音乐手法不断更新其音乐创作形式，或者尽己之最大能力在原有音乐创作形式上再创新。最主要的Pop Underground艺人和乐队：Matthew Sweet, Teenage Fanclub, the Posies, Jellyfish, Material Issue, Jason Falkner, the Velvet Crush，这些乐队不论是通过他们大声嘎扎的吉他（尤其是Matthew Sweet）还是那种富于睿智而优美的歌词，在另类摇滚乐听众中都有着广泛的追随者。然而，Pop Underground中也有部分艺人和乐队不予投合那些学院听众而仍然继续录制原本风格的Power-Pop作品，这些艺人们的作品一般也就是复制最初的那些Power Pop明星（Badfinger、Big Star和the Raspberries等）的音乐，为的是迎合一小部分偏激狂热的听众。
