With his new MSG album, Michael Schenker is celebrating 25 years as a solo artist (actually, it’s 26 years now, but the album was delayed quite a bit). First of all, kudos to Mr. Schenker for not just re-recording some older songs, like many of his colleagues do when celebrating an anniversary. This is an album full of original material – and excellent material at that. ‘Tales Of Rock ‘n’ Roll’ is quite a change from the bluesy rock direction Schenker took on the last couple of lacklustre MSG and UFO albums. This is arguably the heaviest MSG album to date, with a full-on rock attitude. Jari Tiura, the new MSG vocalist, fits right into that bill. He’s got a traditional hard rock / metal voice (including some impressive screams) and he doesn’t sound out of place in the long row of vocalists the band has had. On top of that, all those previous MSG singers (at least, the ones that recorded with MSG) appear here as guests on one track each: Gary Barden, Graham Bonnett, Robin McAuley, Leif Sundin, Kelly Keeling and Chris Logan.
‘Tales…’ blasts off with ‘The Ride’, which will be very recognizable for Schenker fans. Great solo as well – this is what I’ve always liked about the German guitarist. ‘Setting Sun’ is more of the same. By song n° 3 it is clear that this is indeed going to be a magnificent record. ‘Angel Of Avalon’ is a brilliant song (with vocals by Leif Sundin) - perhaps one of the very best Schenker’s done in the last 15 years or so. Chris Logan returns for the melodic ‘Dreams Inside’ - I was never a fan of the Logan albums, but this is a truly fantastic track. And there are more… Listen to heavy tunes like ‘Dust To Dust’ and the terrific ‘Shadow Lady’, or the moody ‘Voice Of My Heart’ – this is MSG as we haven’t heard them for a long, long time – Schenker absolutely shines on these, as does new vocalist Tiura. Kelly Keeling’s and Robin McAuley’s contributions are also quite good, but it is the Graham Bonnet song that really stands out: ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll’ is a brilliant, heavy track that wouldn’t have been out-of-place on the classic ‘Assault Attack’ album. Bonnett is really giving his best here - wonderful stuff… The only real disappointment for me is the Gary Barden track ‘Life Vacation’. Not really a bad song, but I had expected more from the classic Schenker/Barden combination.
19 songs might be overdoing it a bit – the album can’t keep up the quality for the whole length of it. Still, while this may not be his best album ever, at least it is a giant leap in the right direction after his last couple of albums. Welcome back, Mr. Schenker!
